Minimalism Architecture

Whether you have watched Marie Kondo and used her method to de-clutter your life or you’re just beginning the minimalist movement, you know that this is a popular topic and has quickly changed the way we live our life! Further, this has expanded to Minimalism Architecture, and should really be considered for your next home build!

By definition Minimalist Architecture is about achieving better design through simplicity while editing spaces to achieve a place of clarity. Who doesn’t like clean, open spaces that allow the architecture, furniture and the materials in the room to speak for them? Characteristics of a minimalist house design includes:

  1. Simplicity in form & function – Many modern minimalist homes have a simple and efficient layout with stacked volumes of spaces. This creates simple forms, open floor plans, minimal interior walls, efficient storage areas, and an emphasis on views and daylight are defining characteristics of many minimalist floor plans.

  2. Uncomplicated casing & wall finishes – By using simple, continuous casing material it can easily provide visual appeal while expressing the physical characteristics of the materials and their natural texture.

  3. Clean, open & light filled spaces – Open floor plans in living areas allow for a wealth of light to fill the space. By utilizing a light colour on the walls, a clean modern ceiling and a neutral colour palette gives samples a calm interesting appeal.

  4. Simple detailing to avoid over decoration – This can also be more cost effective. For example flat stock trim is not only inexpensive but also an easy way to trim windows and doors while still maintaining a minimalist look.

  5. Strategic use of materials for visual interest, texture and personality – Minimalism isn’t about purging all of your possessions or living just to keep your house clean; it has more to do with choosing order, clarity and intention. By focusing on fewer elements you are not living with less but rather drawing attention to the share, colour and texture of places we occupy.
